Steamboat Springs Despite a slow start, the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team won its 18th consecutive Western Slope League game with a 72-61 win at Rifle on Friday.
The win improves Steamboat to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
After starting slow and trailing 32-27 at halftime, Steamboat came out in the second half and turned the tide of the game on the defensive end of the court.
Led by the hot hand of senior guard Aaron Calkins, Steamboat regained the lead and didn't look back.
"We came out in the second half and picked up our defense," senior point guard Michael Vandahl said.
Although the Sailors weren't overlooking the Bears, Vandahl said playing in Rifle has always been a tough task.
Now, Steamboat prepares for possibly its toughest competition in the league when Glenwood Springs comes to Steamboat for a 5:30 p.m. start today.
For a comparison, Glenwood Spring beat Rifle, 65-54, in a preholiday tournament this season.
"They have athletes," Vandahl said of Glenwood. "We definitely have to come out and play hard."
