Marie Matta: A just solution

As a citizen of Lebanon, and therefore with a personal stake in the future of the Middle East, it was with disbelief that I read Jack and Lynny Huston's letter (Feb. 6, 2008) outlining their provocative view of a proposed peace in Israel.

First, the cedars of Lebanon are a proud symbol of my country's ancient history and its current struggle to preserve its fragile sovereignty, and I resent the claim that this land should become part of a greater Israel.

Second, as a Christian, the God that I believe in created all people equal and does not favor the Jewish people over any other. In fact, He must be greatly saddened at Israel's 60-year oppression of the Palestinians.

Third, my vision for the Middle East is not of a conquering and dominant Israel, but of a compassionate and just solution for the Palestinian people, and of peace between all the countries of the neighborhood. My vision is one where they can all celebrate the common elements of their heritage, culture and religion, worship side by side in the Holy Land and benefit together from the rich history and untapped tourism potential of the region, thereby achieving a new prosperity together.

I pray and remain hopeful that this will occur in my lifetime. The God that I believe in would not see a "Frankenstein state" or a "monster" but would rejoice at peace and reconciliation among His children.

The Hustons letter comes directly from the Bible. God called the Jewish people the apple of His eye.He said His name would be in Jerusalem forever. He has an everlasting covenent with the Jewish people. God never breaks covenent. Of course He loves all. But I am sure you must know Jesus, Mary, Joseph and many others were Jewish. The Bible was totally written by all Jewish people. The cedars of Lebannon was a exact Bible discription of the boundries God gave to Israel. The tree is common in the area. Lebannon uses it as their symbol the same way the states use local trees and flowers for theirs. Why does Ms. Matta not fight to give some of Lebannons land to the Palestinians? Especially if they have a soft spot in her heart? Israel is very tiny. My question to her would be Do you beleive Israel has a right to exist?

The writer, as a citizen of Lebanon, should be directing her outrage at Hizbollah and its backers and suppliers, Syria and Iran. Together they have murdered dozens of Lebanese government and political leaders, most notably Rafik Hariri, who have tried to free Lebanon from their grip. Instead, she suffers from the arab disease of seeing and blaming Israel for the civil strife that has plagued Lebanon long before Israel came into existence.

The shia of Lebanon have been trying for many decades now to marginalize the Christians of Lebanon and turn Lebanon into a Taliban-style state. As long as Syria and Iran and their proxy Hizbullah continue in their plan of destabilizing Lebanon and destroying those who are trying to bring a democratic government into being, Lebanon will continue to spiral along in the same cycle of violence.

What a poor choice for a headline on the letters page. It is inflammatory and does not really reflect the view of Ms. Matta. The actual sentence the headline was extracted from reads:

...the God that I believe in created all people equal and does not favor the Jewish people over any other.

I could make an argument against myself; that the jarring headline made me read a letter I may not normally have paid much attention to. As long as property and possessions take priority over kindness and compassion, there will never be peace on earth.

Hey Pilot Staff Since when has this newspaper become a religious periodical? There are plenty of them on the internet for people to discuss this. At the least this should be put on the community forum. As you can see your willingness to promote religious discussions on the front page has once again divided the community. Will you publish my treatise on my undying love for Madeline Murray O'Hair? I doubt it. Is this another attempt by you to turn your paper into the Steamboat Enquirer? If so you are doing a good job.

People in this town are mean and have no right to talk about Marie's views of Isreeals right to exist like she can do something about that anyway, but being a christian as some people like to say they are (i'm meaning the blog people and act holy and are not who are always blaming or scolding someone) Marie would probably want Isreal to exist I can't say for her but her idea of what she would like to see over there sounds like she would. Do you think the Palestinians should have a home too and do you think there are bad people every where who use religion to fight and kill. Get rid of religion and you get rid of lots of wars. Alot of Christians before they went to jail are bad people and prisons are filled with them.

You Pilot run bad headlines too many times and this seems intentional because when you read it it sounds bad against Marie Matta and if someone sees that in the paper they are jewish they may only see her name and think thats what her letter is about.

Your staff should be ashamed of theirselves when they do bad things like that. last week you wrote about the Steamboat witner carnival bringing our community together and now your paper tries to take the community apart to fight with each other.

We should be discussing all topics that happen in our lifetime and before we were born mainly so history does not repeat its self. Especially religion. Ever notice how someone is always trying to hide something from you? The hidden part was normally incredible and had one known, could have benefited greatly. Watch out for the "Hushers". The past was horrifc for the Jewish people and unfortunately today America has taken a step to give Palenstine Israels land. This is Biblically wrong not to mention morally.Since Scripture says God will bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel. Easy to prove. Look at the dates Washington did anything to Israel. Look at the date of foreclosures, stock problems, and recession looming. The week of hurricane Katrina check what was going on in Washington with Israel. For those trying to stop the Pilots free flow of information go to the sites you enjoy and keep off the the serious discussions such as religion. However if you later change your mind. All are welcome the goal here is to reach peace for all ,to get their much needs to be said that is painful ,it takes many to help one another gather the facts and anyone who wishes has a say. Thanks Steamboat Pilot for granting all a chance to participate.

The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."

Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:

Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized - and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.

In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.

Through Scientology, people all over the world are achieving the long-sought goal of true spiritual release and freedom. Man consists of three parts. The first of these is the spirit, called in Scientology the thetan (from the Greek letter theta, meaning "thought" or "spirit"), which is the individual himself.

The second of these parts is the mind. The thetan uses his mind as a communication and control system between himself and his environment.

The third of these parts is the body. The body is not the person.

The most important of the three parts of man is the thetan, which is the spirit, or you. The basic command followed by all life, "Survive!" is subdivided into eight dynamics (dynamic meaning urge, drive or impulse). All activities in one's varied life can be inspected, understood and harmonized with all others to increase survival.

8th Dynamic INFINITY, also commonly called God, the Supreme Being or Creator.

7th Dynamic SPIRITUAL dynamic - anything spiritual with or without identity, life source.

steamboatsconscience 9 years, 2 months ago

6th Dynamic PHYSICAL UNIVERSE with its four components of matter, energy, space and time.

5th Dynamic LIFE FORMS including all plant and animal life. 4th Dynamic MANKIND as a species.

3rd Dynamic GROUP SURVIVAL whether friends, a club, company, nation or race. 2nd Dynamic FAMILY and children and all other creativity.

1st Dynamic SELF - the individual, including his body, mind and immediate possessions.

Through Scientology, a person realizes that his life and influence extend far beyond himself. By understanding each of these dynamics and their relationship, one to the other, he is able to do so, and thus increase survival on all of these dynamics. A principle of considerable importance in Scientology, and one that greatly assists interpersonal relationships, is that of affinity, reality and communication. The three form an interdependent triangle and add up to understanding. The Tone Scale is a tool used in everyday life to understand what is occurring with individuals and how best to communicate with them. One can find himself or any individual on the Tone Scale and thus know how, using Scientology, he may best be moved up to the higher tones - and thus increased competence, self-esteem, honesty, well-being, happiness and other desirable attributes. 40.0 Serenity of Beingness 30.0 Postulates 22.0 Games 20.0 Action 8.0 Exhilaration 6.0 Aesthetics 4.0 Enthusiasm 3.5 Cheerfulness 3.3 Strong Interest 3.0 Conservatism 2.9 Mild Interest 2.8 Contented 2.6 Disinterested 2.5 Boredom 2.4 Monotony 2.0 Antagonism 1.9 Hostility 1.8 Pain 1.5 Anger 1.4 Hate 1.3 Resentment 1.2 No Sympathy 1.15 Unexpressed Resentment 1.1 Covert Hostility 1.02 Anxiety 1.0 Fear 0.98 Despair 0.96 Terror 0.94 Numb 0.9 Sympathy 0.8 Propitiation 0.5 Grief 0.375 Making Amends 0.3 Undeserving 0.2 Self-Abasement 0.1 Victim 0.07 Hopeless 0.05 Apathy 0.03 Useless 0.01 Dying 0.0 Body Death

All, I agree it was not an appropriate headline. It is never the intention of our newspaper to incite divisiveness in the community. We apologize to any and all who were offended, and we have taken steps to help prevent such future errors in judgment.
