Jake Schwan: What's it all about

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the front page of this paper had a picture of 16 head of elk. The caption read "Thieving Elk."
Although the expression may have been in jest, I couldn't help feeling resentment. Fourteen of those were cows who no doubt each carried an embryo to feed.
We have been stealing from them for centuries. Cattle and sheep ranchers complain, "They are stealing all our BLM pasture."
Whose pasture?
Many ranchers are my friends, and I sympathize with them to an extent. I raise horses and lose quite a bit of hay every night. I don't begrudge them a bit of it. It's only money.
After all, isn't that what it's all about?
