High school put on short lockdown

Precautionary measure lasts only 10 minutes Monday morning

— Steamboat Springs High School was locked down for about 10 minutes Monday morning as a precautionary measure while police officers searched for a student who acted suspiciously and then fled the area.

Steamboat Springs police Capt. Joel Rae said the lockdown was initiated after an officer approached a high school student whose parked vehicle was blocking the southbound lane of Maple Street near the school. The unidentified male student was fumbling with his backpack and told the officer he had to get to class, Rae said.

When a second officer arrived on scene, the student fled down a side street, through a backyard and back across Maple Street. Rae said officers saw the student reach his hand into the waistband of his pants. That action prompted the precautionary lockdown, during which no one was allowed to enter or exit the high school.

Rae said a long foot pursuit ended when the student was apprehended while coming out of the Spring Creek area and onto Amethyst Drive. Rae also said police recovered less than 1 ounce of marijuana that they suspect the student discarded during the chase.

The 18-year-old was not arrested, and Rae declined to identify him. Rae said the police department and school officials are working with the suspect and his parents to "determine the best course of action."

They can't afford to have a drug sniffing dog around here because somebody might let it get near the wrong car, or the wrong airplane, or the wrong house, or the wrong kid . . .

So a cop chasing what sounds like a hurried/nervous kid who runs away, while reaching for something unseen in his pants should just be considered practicing for track?

What if it had been a gun, LookoutJoe?

you're an idiot lookout. maybe your right, maybe the kid is just high, and even if you were right 99% of the time and the kid was running because he was drunk/stoned, you should still lock the school down, because the one time you're wrong and what is in his waistband is something else, kids could die. But you keep your head in the sand and keep believing nothing bad ever happens in Steamboat.

Why wasn't a drug sniffing dog used to search for whatever the police officer thought he saw the suspect throw in the snow ? ( Per the police scanner) Do the police still have any dogs for drug detection?

wow, complete over-reaction from the higher-ups here. A car blocking the road, and then the kid runs? Hmmm, well, sounds like the kid was blitzed. I don't know why catching a kid with grass promts a lockdown

before I'd even heard it was marijuana, that's what I'd figured, sticking his hand in his pants.. maybe I'm naive but generally kids are more interested in drugs than weapons.. give them a little credit

Reaching into you pants while being chased by a cop will get you shot in a lot of places.

People have no idea how right you are. One other thing. It wont be changing any time soon.

this lockdown was a good excuse to get out of French class for 10 minutes. I for one am thankful that the blazed idiot ran and that the cops overreacted. The funniest thing I think is that this kid (I know him) is the most paranoid kid ever and, like an idiot, runs. You have no idea!

Ive heard that most people who have pot on them are paranoid. And they do run because it's illegal , espicially on school grounds!!!
