— The script for the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball hasn't changed.

Despite lopsided defeats to Rifle and Glenwood Springs last week, Sailors coach John Ameen said his girls had a good week of practice, with a specific focus on several elements that have been the team's Achilles heel this year.

"It was the same thing we do every week. Focus on this week and try to improve," Ameen said. "Last weekend, it was the presses that got us."

Steamboat should get plenty of opportunities to break the press when Delta and Palisade come to Steamboat. Steamboat (3-14 overall, 2-7 in league play) plays Delta at 6 p.m. today and Palisade at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Ameen said along with practice focusing on breaking the press, he continues to stress offensive continuity and maintaining a high level of intensity.

Steamboat struggled on the offensive side of the ball in its first meeting against Delta, a 43-29 loss. Ameen said the Sailors had no problems locking down on defense or breaking the press, but on offense Steamboat was out of rhythm.

"We were one pass then shoot. We were hurrying it up," Ameen said. "We got shots, but they weren't good ones."

Ameen feels confident that if Steamboat can stop Delta's dribble penetration, the team will have a good shot at winning.

Against Palisade, Ameen said avenging the Sailors' earlier 57-40 loss to the Bulldogs comes down to rebounding.

In their first meeting, Ameen said Steamboat struggled to get defensive rebounds, leading to early foul trouble.

"The thing with rebounding is you can drill it in practice, but then it comes game time and they have to remember they have to get a body on someone," Ameen said. "On the offensive end, it's remembering to crash the boards."

With the continuous growth and improvement Ameen has seen from his team, he said the season is at the point where this weekend could bring a couple of wins.

"These are two teams I have the confidence we can beat this weekend," Ameen said.
