Steamboat Springs Half a dozen people bustled back and forth from a maroon pickup Monday, hauling food, cat litter and toys into Steamboat Springs Animal Shelter.
The items came from horse boarders and staff members at Sidney Peak Ranch Equestrian Center. The group has collected products and money for the shelter since Thanksgiving.
"We wanted, as a group, to be able to share all the things we can for animals," barn manager Roxanna Shores said. "We worked through the different options, and this is the one we chose."
Donna Dunkelberger, who boards her horse at Sidney Peak, helped coordinate the drive. It netted more than 100 pounds of food, more than 50 pounds of cat litter, $530 and other items for the animals. At least 45 people contributed, Shores said.
Animal shelter manager Molly Waters was rubbing down a freshly bathed puppy when the group arrived at noon Monday, loading the donations onto a desk.
"We're thrilled," Waters said with a smile. "We can always use donations. It's great."
This is a popular time of the year for donors, Waters said. People often donate money to the shelter when they come in for other purposes, she said.
"This is our first big donation we've seen of food and litter, so that's been nice," Waters said.
The equestrians wanted to support the community in an animal-oriented way, Shores said. They also want to get others into the spirit of giving for the holidays, Dunkelberger said.
"It's from all of us, with a lot of love," Shores said.
