Steamboat Springs — After playing solid basketball for six straight quarters, the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team couldn't get anything going on the final day of the Flaming Gorge Classic Basketball tournament, falling to Rock Springs, Wyo., 69-29.

"They were very, very aggressive on the defensive end with ball pressure," Steamboat coach John Ameen said about Rock Springs. "They were denying passing lanes. We folded. It wasn't that we quit, but we were just not doing things right."

Initially, the Sailors looked as if they'd carry their solid play from Friday and the second half of Thursday's game into Saturday.

Steamboat (3-5 overall) trailed just 9-4 midway through the first quarter, when things started to go wrong. Rock Springs turned up its defensive intensity and managed to get easy buckets to the tune of 21-7 after one quarter.

From there, Ameen said, it was all downhill.

"After the game, and they even said it, is the team aspect broke down," Ameen said. "It's a matter of knowing now that, going into break, we need to know what to improve on."

Gracie Stockdale and Hannah Moore led the Sailors with eight points apiece. Emi Birch chipped in eight rebounds while Colleen King grabbed seven.

With the break upon Steamboat, Ameen said this loss especially hurts. He said it will be tough during the break to improve in struggling areas before Western Slope League play begins.

"I don't know what it is," Ameen said. "We're still finding answers. From the second half on Thursday and the game (Friday) there were so many positives. But when we play like this, I don't have any answers. This just showed how much better we need to get. Not sure how close it's going to be in the Western Slope League, but the quickness and intensity in teams we'll definitely see."
