Steamboat Springs The Hayden boys basketball team advanced in the Cowboy Shootout Tournament on Thursday night in Meeker, beating Altamont, 64-55.
Graig Medvesk led the way with 21 points, scoring often thanks to a potent fast-break offense. Tigers' coach Mike Luppes said another key to the game was the team's forwards. Zach Barnes had 19 points playing down low.
"We were able to push the ball fast breaking, and we dominated in the middle," he said. "We were able to go to Zach on a very regular basis with screens and rolls."
Hayden built a huge first-half lead and was up by 22 to start the third quarter. The Tigers expanded the advantage even further in the third quarter before inserting reserves to finish the game off. Altamont, from Utah, outscored the Tigers 18-8 in the fourth quarter, but that wasn't nearly enough to overcome Hayden's big lead.
"We played well," Luppes said.
Hayden advanced to the tournament's semifinal round and will play at 7:45 p.m. today against Meeker.
