Reservations down in Aspen

Advance bookings for Christmas bleak in Snowmass Village

— Current bookings would produce an average occupancy of only 59 percent during Christmas week for the Aspen lodging industry, a report released Tuesday shows.

The outlook is even bleaker in Snowmass Village, according to an occupancy report performed for the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, town of Snowmass Village and Aspen Skiing Co.

"It's not going to be dead. It's just not (going to be) as busy as we're accustomed to," said Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen Snowmass, a central bookings agency.

The report shows that the average occupancy for Aspen's lodging industry is only 59 percent for the week that includes Christmas - 28 percent behind last year's actual figures.

Reservations already on the books for Snowmass properties would produce only a 43 percent occupancy rate right now, compared with an actual level of 75 percent last year.

"It's a little disheartening," Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle said. "We'd like to see some last-minute bookings close those gaps."

The occupancy numbers are overall averages based on surveys of Aspen and Snowmass Village properties. Some individual properties are nearly full for the holidays. Others reported dozens of empty units. The numbers reflect reservations as of Nov. 30.

Zac: As the story's byline indicates, this is a story published by The Aspen Times, and written by its reporters. I think many Steamboat Pilot & Today readers are interested in what's happening in communities that are the most similar to ours - i.e., other mountain resort towns in Colorado. Their tourism numbers, sales tax revenues, affordable housing issues, etc., have relevance to what we're experiencing and will continue to experience in Routt County. That's why we've been posting some of those stories to our Web site and publishing them in our print edition.
