Steamboat Springs — Even with the offense not where it needed to be, the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team easily breezed past Basalt, 63-38, on the closing day of the Brenda Patch Tournament in Carbondale.
Steamboat jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter and a 32-19 lead at halftime, before putting the game away in the third quarter.
Sailors coach John Ameen said after a good first quarter, Steamboat struggled to find offensive consistency.
"In the second quarter, we started to lag," Ameen said. "We weren't running our offense really well. We could have extended our lead. It should have been more than a 13-point game (at halftime). But in the third quarter we outscored them, 19-10."
Steamboat improved to 2-0.
Along with a solid halfcourt defense that emphasized ball pressure, the Sailors used a full-court press to run away with two wins.
Ameen said what has made the press work is he has the athletes and depth to run it for entire games.
"It's a reversal from the previous two years," Ameen said "We'd always be pressed into turnovers and quick shots. Now, we've turned the tables."
Colleen King led the way for Steamboat with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Gracie Stockdale added 13 points, and Emi Birch chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Steamboat now prepares for Thursday to Saturday's Steamboat ShootOut. Ameen said the Sailors are a confident group.
"They've been through the bad, and now hopefully this is the step in the right direction," Ameen said. "I don't want to say it's a swagger, but there is more confidence of we're going to stretch this lead and be able to come out and play with teams."
