— On a different course on a different day, the Steamboat Springs High School golf team returned to form.

A day after posting the team's worst score of the season in Delta, Steamboat bounced back with a 228 on Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose, finishing just six shots behind Montrose.

"We went into the day with a little more positive attitude," said Steamboat coach Steve Dodson, whose team practiced for more than an hour Wednesday night to work out the kinks from Delta. "They don't like to be embarrassed. They like to compete, but they were embarrassed (Wednesday). They didn't want it to happen again."

Scott Ptach and Kaelen Gunderson led the way for the Sailors with a pair of 74s. Ben VonThaden shot 80, Skylar Martin shot 83, Alan Capistron shot 84, and Patrick Weston shot 87.

"We're still throwing away a couple of shots here and there," Dodson said. "But all in all it was a real productive day."

Judging from the scorecards Thursday, Steamboat certainly could have gone lower and made up the six shots on Montrose.

Despite their 74s, Ptach and Gunderson each left shots out on the course. Gunderson had 35 putts, and Ptach had a double bogey on No. 18.

"It's definitely a confidence-builder that we played that bad (Wednesday) and were able to come back and shoot this good" Thursday, said Ptach, who was 1-under on the back nine before the debacle on 18.

"I was trying to do some work," Gunderson said. "But I really need to work on my putting."

Dodson said there still is work to be done.

"I thought it was good learning experience the last two days," Dodson said. "I enjoyed watching them compete. They want to post a low number and they're not trying to give anything away, but sometimes that happens in this game. They know it, and I know it."

Steamboat's next tournament is Wednesday at Haymaker Golf Course.

Dodson encourages residents to come out and support Steamboat in its only home event of the year.
