— Students in Steamboat Springs will be subjected to their first tests before school starts.

The first Kids' Health and Safety Fair will provide a free battery of screenings to students from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot next to the Rinn Chiropractic Center on Anglers Drive.

Medical and police forces will be on hand to give spinal screenings with backpack safety tips, ID packets from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, free toothbrushes and vision tests.

Tim Rinn said the chiropractic center has been holding children's days for some time and wanted to expand the popular service to allow more students to take part.

"Many of the kids have backpacks that are just way too heavy for them, and it's starting to create a lot of spinal problems later on," he said.

Students will be instructed on how much they should put in a backpack, how to pack it and how backpacks should be fitted to avoid discomfort.

Rinn said his center will also be using a "Myovision" device to test muscle balance and potential spinal problems in students. It's a simple test students can receive standing up, he said, that can spot potential problems in their posture.

McCreight Progressive Dentistry also will provide free toothbrushes and toothpaste, tooth impressions and dental screenings.

Lewis Cutter Jr., from Mountain Eyeworks also will be on hand to provide color vision and depth perception eye tests, as well as standard eye tests.

"We thought with the kids getting ready for school, it'd be really neat to provide several different screenings in one place for free," Rinn said.
