Bank codes possibly were used to get personal data

— The personal data of about 5,000 people might have been compromised through improper use of Wells Fargo access codes, a spokeswoman said. The Associated Press reported the possible breach Tuesday. Wells Fargo was notified of the issue July 1.

Those who might be affected are random consumers, Wells Fargo spokeswoman Mary Berg said Wednesday.

"Some are Wells Fargo customers, and some are not. : We don't believe Wells Fargo customers are specifically targeted," she said.

The unauthorized use of bank codes was reported by MicroBilt Corp., a third-party consumer data vendor. The bank uses the codes to retrieve information about customers or potential customers, Berg said.

Wells Fargo is notifying people who might be affected and is offering them a year membership to a credit monitoring service, she said.

"The reason we're taking responsibility is, this was a Wells Fargo access code," Berg said. "It's under investigation."
