Rain thwarts, supports Town Challenge race
Weather causes delays, but sweetens trails

Steamboat Springs If there is one good thing about the recent rain's impact on the Steamboat Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series, it's that the trails are in pristine condition.
After rain thwarted the series for the third time of the year last week, the Dog Days of Summer Cross-Country on Howelsen Hill and Emerald Mountain was rescheduled for today.
Children's races begin at 5:25 p.m. with adult races to follow.
"Everything is riding really, really well," series director Gretchen Sehler said. "All the rain we've had has done us a lot of good. It's hard, and it's tacky. Hopefully, though, we can keep the rain away," today.
Sehler said races in the pro, expert and singlespeed divisions will be tours of Emerald Mountain. Riders in those divisions will climb all 10.5 miles to the top of Emerald before coming down a technical descent.
"Guys that have really good technical skills will do really well," Sehler said. "It's a tight and twisty downhill."
The other divisions won't climb as high but still will take part in a 7.5-mile ride.
The race is the second and final event of the year at Howelsen Hill. The Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series still has races scheduled for Buffalo Pass on Aug. 20 and Mount Werner on Sept. 5. Riders can register for the Dog Days of Summer Cross-Country at the race site, prior to the start of the race.
The cost is $11 for children and $16 for adults.
