Steamboat Briefs for Aug. 12

Mount Werner Road will be closed between U.S. Highway 40 and Routt County Road 14 for 0.3 miles from noon to 1 p.m. today for the memorial dedication of the Tree Haus Bridge. There will be no detour.

The dedication ceremony begins at 12:15 p.m. and is in memory of Louis G. Gabos, a county engineer from 1987 to 2005 who was the bridge's project engineer. Gabos died in 2005. Arta Wray, a Routt County Road and Bridge Department employee, said Gabos' sisters from Pennsylvania will attend the ceremony.

Routt County Commissioner Diane Mitsch Bush described Gabos as a "delightful man," and Wray said he did a lot of good "in a quiet way."

"He really didn't like us to beat his drum very much either," Wray said.

Call the Routt County Road and Bridge Department at 879-0831 for more information.

Man breaks leg Friday in semitrailer accident

A 50-year-old Commerce City man was involved in a one-vehicle accident early Friday that left him with a broken leg.

Chris Stokes was driving a semitrailer on westbound U.S. Highway 40 when he began to go off the road in a curve. Deputies from the Colorado State Patrol report that he overcorrected, crossed two lanes of traffic, hit a large tree and landed in a creek near mile marker 152.

Stokes was transported to Yampa Valley Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Deputies reported that drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
