Juniors, parents try for titles at tourney

— Luke Brosterhous, junior director at Haymaker Golf Course, loves to see parents getting out on the course with their children.

That's why he's inviting juniors and their parents to come out to the course this Sunday and take a swing at bringing home a title in the Parent-Junior Golf tournament during the final junior event of the season. The cost to play is $25 and does not include greens fees for the nine-hole tournament. However, the course will offer a special $15 nine-hole fee for resident nonpass holders.

"This tournament is open to everyone," Brosterhous said. "I think we've been doing it for the last six years, and it's just a fun way to end the season that's been a popular event for parents and juniors."

The event, which begins at 1 p.m. with lunch and a team putting contest, uses a nine-hole Stableford format - a point system in which golfers are awarded points based on their score as compared to a fixed score - that teams parents with their children. The first tee time is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Juniors must be 18 or younger, and they can play with adults other than their parents if they choose. Players can enter the tournament until today or until the field is full.

Brosterhous said the event marks the end of another successful junior season at Hay-maker. He said the programs drew nearly 60 juniors on a regular basis, and some programs peaked at more than 100 golfers.

Last weekend, Haymaker held its season-ending junior championships at the course and handed out titles in four age divisions.

Chris Lauinger shot a 78 to win the 14 to 18 age class. Zephyr Erickson and Michael Mueller shared second place after both finished with rounds of 95. The 14 to 18 division, the oldest group in the tournament, was the only group to play a full 18-hole round. The other classes played nine holes, with the youngest class playing a six-hole round.

Brandon Martin carded a 50 to win the 11 to 13 age division. He was chased by Luke Dennahy and Charles Toye, who also shared second place with rounds of 52. Jake Lauinger led the 9 to 10 age division with a 44. Noah Bass finished at 63, and Jake Taulman was third at 64. Two golfers played six-hole rounds. Taylor Fielding led the way with a 53 to win the girls division, and Theo Holdeman shot a 62 to win the boys division.

The junior tournaments mark the end of Haymaker's summer junior programs. The high school golf team opened the season last week by winning a tournament in Battlement Mesa, and most of the other junior golfers in Steamboat Springs are enjoying the final days of summer vacation before returning to school Aug. 25.
