— The first day of organized high school practices for fall sports is Monday.

While most teams have held optional conditioning camps and have been to summer team camps, Monday is the first day the Colorado High School Activities As-sociation allows coaches to run mandatory practices.

All sports at the three area schools begin Monday.

At Steamboat Springs High School, the cross-country team looks to build on a successful season with second-year coach Matt Reinhold. The cross-country team meets at 6:30 p.m. in front of the high school by the picnic tables.

"Be ready to run, and that's about it," Reinhold said.

Boys soccer looks to get back to the playoffs with a meeting and fitness test at 9 a.m. at the high school. Boys tennis - though young - will be looking to continue its dominance in the region with a 1 p.m. start at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs. The first practice will be a tournament to determine the varsity squad. Interested players should call coach John Aragon at 846-2282.

Freshman volleyball players start at 9 a.m., and sophomores, juniors and seniors start at 8 a.m. All practices are held in the high school gymnasium.

Steamboat football starts its schedule with an 8:20 a.m. team meeting in the varsity locker room. The team takes the field for the first time at 9 a.m.

Softball begins its year under coach Dan Swanson with a practice at 6 p.m. at the Steamboat Springs Middle School fields. All girls from Steamboat, Hayden and Soroco high schools are encouraged to play.

In Hayden, the Hayden High School volleyball team meets at 9 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. The football team - fresh off advancing to the Class 1A state semifinals - has an 11 a.m. meeting in the high school auditorium before beginning practice at 4 p.m.

In South Routt, Soroco volleyball begins at 8 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. The football team starts to make its adjustment to eight-man football at 8 a.m. on the school's football field.
