Jean Wright: Sexism wrong
Advertisement
The same press that once adored Bush and who followed his lead in denouncing those who disagreed with him as "unpatriotic" are continuing in the same vein. Maureen Dowd has hopped right on that wagon. This election, anyone who dislikes their darling Obama must be racist. And supporters of Hillary who will not vote for Obama can only be described as "bitter," "whiners," etc.
Obama stated that he knew there had been frustration about what Hillary's supporters saw as sexism in the primary. How can signs reading "Get Back in the Kitchen?" be perceived as anything but sexist? What a stink there would have been if "Get Back to the Back of the Bus" signs had shown up at Obama's speeches.
Sexism is just as wrong and ugly as racism. Women have just as much right to be angry about gender slurs as members of minorities do over racial slurs. Since, as a woman, my opinion is of so little value, the Democrats will do without my vote for president. I am unmoved by any of the name-calling; I call it consequences.
No, I will not vote for Obama. Yet I certainly cannot vote for McCain. I will, however, be casting my vote against the Republican party in every other race.
