Steamboat man airlifted after horseback accident
Steamboat Springs A 44-year-old Steamboat Springs man was airlifted Saturday after sustaining significant injuries in a horse-riding accident near Buffalo Pass.
Dawn Alperti, incident commander with Routt County Search and Rescue, said the man fell off his horse and landed on a tree around noon Saturday. He was riding with three other local men, Alperti said, in a trip that began on private property near the Spring Creek and Soda Creek trailheads, southeast of the Continental Divide in Routt County.
Rescuers reached the man within an hour of his fall. They decided transporting him from the scene by all-terrain vehicle or by carrying him likely would exacerbate his injuries, which were suspected to be internal.
South Routt fire contained
Sgt. Seth Merrick of the Routt County Sheriff's Office confirmed Saturday that a fire south of Toponas on Routt County Road 1 was contained and did not cause any injuries.
Routt and Eagle counties' fire crews responded to the barn fire at about 1 p.m. Saturday. At 6 p.m. Saturday, Routt County Emergency Management Director Chuck Vale said the fire was contained.
"They're currently in mop-up mode, which means the fire isn't getting any bigger," Vale said.
The fire burned about 3 acres of land, a barn full of hay and a number of wooden sheds, Vale said.
