Ange Young: Local superheroes

Steamboat Springs Although most people hold firefighters in high regard, my sons Kaleb and Kasen view Steamboat's crew as nothing short of superheroes.
On June 22, Kaleb, 3, and Kasen, 1, held their joint birthday parties at the Mountain Fire Station. About 15 kids and parents were spellbound by the fire drill put on by firefighter Matt. It takes a lot to keep toddlers engaged, but Matt had them hanging on to every word.
He demonstrated how firefighters must become fully geared up in a matter of minutes. Although his fire mask made him look like a space alien, he explained how children should not be frightened, but should go to a firefighter dressed in such a way.
The children had an opportunity to hold the fire hose and spray a bucket, thanks to firefighter Chuck. He told them stories, gave them hats and stickers and made them feel like they were junior firefighters.
Steamboat is a great place to live because of people like these men. I can't thank them enough for their kindness and patience. As a matter of fact, I think I must agree with Kaleb and Kasen that these guys really are superheroes.

My husband is also a firefighter. They put their life on the line for you and me and receive very little gratitude in the form of financial reimbursement. They do it because they love what they do. Very few people do that any more. They are not just heros to the children, they are heros to me too, giving their life to helping others!!!

Wow I wish I had a birthday party like that growing up! What a bunch of lucky kids! I'm sure this is something they will always remember.
