Yampa Valley Electric seeks loan to keep up with growth

From the Thursday, April 24, 1958, edition of The Steamboat Pilot:

An expected loan of more than $1 million for 150 miles of new lines, new equipment and stepped-up transmission over the wide area covered by Yampa Valley Electric Co. is waiting approval in Washington, Engineer Ev Bristol said Wednesday.

Bristol emphasized the money would be used over a long period as needed, probably during the next four years.

On tap for Steamboat is a 4,160 volt Y system for greater capacity. The present system is 2,400 volt Delta.

A larger conductor, new feeders from the substation, line trucks, additional equipment and tools so work can be done on the 69,000 main transmission line while it is energized are in the future plans.

Bathhouse scheduled to open Saturday

All that is needed now to make perfect the opening of Steamboat's fine bathhouse and pools is continued balmy weather, as Hoyt Shaw and Crosby Perry-Smith have worked hard to speed the opening date to this coming weekend.

The indoor pool has been repainted a sky blue, and the two men have repainted the private pools, cemented cracks in the walks and installed three diving boards, including a new high dive with plenty of spring.

This promises to be a great season, with the fine weather contrasting nicely with the last year, when continued rain and cold put a damper on the spring swimming program.

Townsfolk will get a bargain on swimming pleasure hard to find elsewhere with almost five months of splashing about for only $5.

Season rates for children younger than 12 are $4. Daily rates are 50 cents for all those 12 and older and 25 cents for swimmers younger than 12.

The private pools, of which there are 10, run $10 a season for a couple and $7.50 for one person.

Swimming lessons at low group rates are available with expert instructors throughout the long season. A terrific free program for school children will be kicked off May 1, with well over 300 students expected to take advantage of the lessons.

Catalina and Rose Marie bathing suits for the ladies will be rented for 50 cents a day. Men also have a wide selection of good suits rented at 25 cents a day.

Classification tests will open the swimming program for some 350 school children Monday, with six instructors set to handle the month's work.

Pilot Opinion: Pay scale up

County officials elected to four-year terms this November will get a substantial increase in pay when they take office in January.

Under a bill passed by the last Legislature, the pay of sheriff, clerk, treasurer and assessor jumps from $4,100 a year to $4,700. County superintendent of schools increases from $3,800 to $4,400. The pay of county commissioners will increase from $2,200 to $2,640 a year, and the pay of county judge, in the middle of a four-year term, goes from $4,100 to $4,700.
