Food assistance available from LIFT-UP Routt County

The LIFT-UP of Routt County offices in Hayden, Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs are distributing USDA commodities for the second quarter of 2008 through the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program. Each eligible household may receive food from the program once per quarter. The quarterly distribution ends June 30. Call 870-8804, from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, to inquire about income eligibility and hours of operation for each office.

Energy assistance available through LEAP program

The Routt County Department of Human Services is accepting applications for its Low Income Energy Assistance Program through Wednesday. LEAP is a federally funded program designed to help low-income households meet their winter home heating costs; it does not pay the entire cost of home heating.

Household income may not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The maximum monthly income for a one-person household is $1,574. Applications can be picked up at the Human Services office, 135 Sixth Street in downtown Steamboat Springs. For information, call Ruth Ann at 879-1540 or 1-866-432-8435.

Advocates announces volunteer training session

Advocates Against Battering and Abuse will conduct a volunteer training session beginning May 3. Volunteer training includes 25 hours and prepares volunteers to respond to a 24-hour crisis line. The training will take four to six weeks to complete. Volunteers offer support, advocacy, information and referrals to victims of domestic violence and other crimes. Sign-ups under way for North Routt Golf Classic

Registration is under way for the sixth annual North Routt Golf Classic on June 8 at the Steamboat Sheraton Golf Club. All proceeds benefit the North Routt Community Charter School. Space is limited, so sign up early. Pre-registration costs $135 per golfer or $520 per foursome and includes cart, lunch and prizes. Rates increase beginning May 29.
