Captains meeting in mid-May with play to begin in mid-June

— The Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department is accepting team registrations for its adult soccer, softball and beach volleyball leagues.

The deadline to register for co-ed adult soccer and all softball teams is 5 p.m. May 7. Beach volleyball will have an organizational meeting in mid-May, with the league expected to start in mid-June.

Kit Rice, sports coordinator for the Parks and Recreation Department, encourages teams to register as soon as possible - especially in the softball leagues.

"There's movement, but we typically average 50 teams," Rice said. "You can tentatively get a spot, but it's definitely first-come, first-served."

Rice said although the co-ed and men's softball leagues fill up quickly, she's still looking for teams or individuals to play in the women's league. Rice is gauging interest in the league as part of an effort to keep it alive.

Among the changes to league rules this year: all softball leagues will be required to use bats that meet Amateur Softball Association regulations.

The soccer league again will play games at Ski Town Fields until Triple Crown arrives. Games then will be played at the Christian Heritage School fields west of the city.

The Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series also is getting ready to start, with the first race of the year slated for May 28. An early registration party is scheduled for May 14 at Old Town Pub. The early registration party is the only time people can get the discounted season passes.

All teams or individuals interested in participating should call Rice at 879-4300, ext. 322.
