Ken Meyer: Is it spring?

— Mrs. Robin arrived today, April 8, 2008, at our home on Routt County Road 33. She has been in the Southern states for the winter and looked somewhat tired from her long journey to get back here. She is quite tame and let me get real close to her before she would hop off a few feet at a time.

Her nest under the porch is still intact, so I imagine she will be busy the next few days getting reorganized and all the straw in place. She will probably also bring in some fresh twigs and straw just to freshen the place up a bit.

Mrs. Robin looked sort of bewildered because of the huge amount of snow still covering the landscape. I told her to be patient, that I was sure that we would have some warm weather soon and the snow would go away so she could start looking for night crawlers on the green grass again. At that, she perked up and I believe she smiled a bit.

It's amazing to me how our beautiful birds can travel thousands of miles in the fall and then come back and find the same dwelling to nest in six months later. It's one of God's many wonders. I doubt that we will ever understand how that all works out. I am humbled by it.
