New pool, slides taking shape

Hot Springs renovation aims for Christmas-week opening

Hot springs water is pumped from a well into the Heart Spring at Old Town Hot Springs as construction workers construct a pool in the background. A $3.5 million renovation project is on schedule for a Christmas finish.

— The construction site at the Old Town Hot Springs is looking more and more like the final product. A mechanical room has been constructed, the walls of a new, curving activity pool are being built and two new waterslides are nearly complete.

"The slides are pretty much down," said Director Pat Carney.

Two new, shorter slides are replacing the old, green slide built in 1981. Carney said the slides will provide a more exciting and faster ride.

The $3.5 million renovation project at the health and recreation facility still is on schedule for a Christmas-week finish, Carney said Friday. In addition to the slides and activity pool, the project includes two new spas, a deck and a rock-climbing wall in the deep end of the activity pool. The smaller of the two new spas won't open until later in the winter, Carney said.

The additions required that the hillside on the east side of the Hot Springs be dug to an additional 20 feet of depth to create extra space.

Earlier in the summer, the construction was frustrated by a collection of surprises revealed during excavation. Carney compared the process to an archaeological dig; surprises included the discovery of two new springs and a 100-year-old clay water pipe.

"We hope the surprises are over, only because the digging is over," Carney said. "Things could still go wrong though, of course."

Although excavation work is complete, the construction is still causing some headaches. On Friday, mud found its way into the water system, forcing the closure of the shallow pool for a few hours.

What is the diameter of the slide? It appears small for a person of 250# taking a little tike in his lap for a ride. The tube does not appear translucent, unless there are lights in the tube (NOT), this may be a really scary ride.

What a joke that new slide is!! At the entrance to town it looks like six flags! Another scaring of the scenery......did city council know it would stick out like that.
