Steamboat Springs Former Bridgestone Winter Driving School instructor and Steamboat Springs resident Tanner Foust fell short of an elusive 2007 Rally America National Championship win last weekend at the Lake Superior Performance Rally in Houghton, Mich.
Foust's and Beavis's RockStar Energy Drink Syms Racing Rally Team established a healthy lead in the early stages, but fell behind because of a flat tire on their 2007 Subaru WRX STi.
Subaru Rally Team USA teammates Travis Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom edged Foust and Beavis in the final stages by 3.5 seconds for the win.
Pastrana secured his second consecutive overall driver's title in the series with four 2007 overall wins. He took third behind Foust at Rally Colorado, Sept. 22 and 23 in Steamboat Springs. Foust finished fourth overall in the driver standings behind Pastrana (1st), RockStar Energy Drink teammate Andrew Pinker (2nd) and Ken Block (3rd).
Foust, 34, and co-driver Chrissie Beavis' finished second at Rally Colorado, also after blowing out a tire. Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino won that race.
"For the RockStar and Syms team, it's a great accomplishment in our first year," Foust told Rally America of his successful first season in the series' open class, highlighted by a gold-medal win at the Rally Car Racing Super Special event that closed X Games 13 in early August.
Foust's 2007 season was also marked by tremendous success in his other driving discipline - drift racing. Foust won the Formula D Finals on Oct. 13 at the Irwindale Speedway in California to earn him the Formula D Series Championship title.
Rally America also recently announced its nine-race 2008 National Championship Series schedule. Rally Colorado is scheduled again as the eighth race. ESPN2 will air its "Championship Coverage" of Rally Colorado and the final Lake Superior Performance Rally from 4 to 4:30 Nov. 20.
