Jean Heaney
Age: 35
Occupation: English teacher (though I work at the Bud Werner Memorial Library right now)
Place of birth: Maryland
Q. When did you move to Routt County and what brought you here?
A. June 2007. My sister and her husband live here, and my aunt raised her kids here back in the 1970s.
Q. What's the biggest risk you've taken recently?
A. Leaving a stable job in New York City, Trekking cross-country with my dog for a month and landing here on a whim!
Q. Describe your morning routine.
A. Up around 7:30. Make coffee. Walk my dog, Winni. Drink coffee. Eat breakfast - usually oatmeal, cereal or whole wheat pancakes - with fruit if it's in season. Drink more coffee and read.
Q. Has a book ever changed your life? What was it and why?
A. So many! Um. "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins (son of Robbins of the ice cream giant Baskin Robbins). Made me try vegetarianism for a while and exposed the awful state of affairs in factory farming and genetically modified foods. Scary! I'm no longer a veg-head, but Barbara Kingsolver's new book, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," is reminding me of the importance of eating (and demanding from our restaurants and grocery stores) locally grown and seasonal foods - and eating only free-range, organic meats!
Q. What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
A. This too shall pass.
Q. What three things would you want people to know about you?
A. 1. I love to talk about deep stuff. 2. I'm a great listener. 3. I love English and love to teach it, so if you need help in the subject, call me!
Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A. A horse whisperer.
Q. Do you collect anything?
A. Magnets from places I've been. Isn't that funny?
Q. Who is your favorite superhero? Why?
A. Wonderwoman. The cool bracelets. Yep, I had the Underoos.
Q. Do you have any phobias?
A. Not really big on heights, but it's not really a phobia. It's more of a love for having my feet on the ground - bare feet, on grass, love it.
