I'm responding to the article from the Oct. 3, 1957, edition of the Steamboat Pilot in your "Looking Back" section about the concern of many accidents on U.S. Highway 40. There were 21 accidents, with seven fatalities between Steamboat Springs and Kremmling. I have traveled this narrow road since 1945 and have seen very little change.
This U.S. highway needs to be widened. There is no shoulder, only a white line in Grand County. I was driving this section Oct. 1 and was forced off the road by an extra wide half-trailer, one of four that was being towed northward. Speed may be one factor, but widening the road would eliminate future accidents. It would be interesting to know about the recent statistics and if Summit, Grand and Routt counties will improve their roads. Many lives may be saved if this can be done.
