Steamboat Springs Local musician Paul Geppert has been playing guitar for more than 30 years.
He used to play mornings at the downtown coffeeshop Mocha Molly's. So when Steaming Bean Coffee took up the space this summer, Geppert approached store owner Todd Moore about starting up that gig again.
A few months later, Geppert is one of two weekend morning acts playing folk rock to patrons sipping espresso drinks and munching on fresh pastries.
"I usually just sit around on Sunday mornings at home and play guitar anyway, so I might as well be playing there and getting some tips," Geppert said of his regular Sunday morning set of covers and originals.
Moore said Geppert's set, along with a more contemporary collection of Saturday morning solo folk rock from 21-year-old Adrian Osgood, provide an opportunity to hear live music in a relaxed environment.
"It's just an alternative to going out to a bar to listen to some music," Moore said. That alternative appeals to parents with young children - Moore included - given the early performances and family-friendly atmosphere.
"And they're two very different entertainers - Paul has been in a band for years and is very used to being in front of people. Adrian is just starting out. I think it's a great venue for both players," Moore said.
For now, Geppert and Osgood are in it for the chance to play to an audience.
"I went in a couple weeks ago and said, 'You know, I like to play, I wouldn't be interested in making money or anything,'" Geppert said, adding that might change if business really picks up during ski season.
Moore said he plans to keep the music going for as long as Osgood and Geppert are in - and possibly beyond.
"If they decide they don't want to keep doing it, then we'll definitely try to find someone else."
