Steamboat briefs for Nov. 1

— Gas valve briefly evacuates Strawberry Park school

Strawberry Park Elementary School was evacuated Wednesday morning after a school employee smelled gas in the school.

Principal Brenda Smith Barr said the odor was strong enough that school staff and children were evacuated for 30 minutes while Atmos Energy technicians investigated the leak.

Atmos technicians determined a gas supply valve to the gymnasium's furnace was turned off. The furnace unit was taken out of service.

Judge grants continuation for Cisneros murder case

No trial date has been set for Luz Cisneros, mother of deceased 1-year-old Brianna Simon. Cisneros' legal representation was granted a continuance Wednesday in Routt County Court.

Cisneros is charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 6 death of her daughter at their Walton Pond apartment. Cisneros has yet to enter a plea and has remained in custody since her arrest.

Public defender Sheryl Uhlmann requested a continuance to allow the defense time to research documents that have not yet been made available, including autopsy and laboratory reports.

"There's still a fair amount of discovery we don't have," Uhlmann said.

Assistant District Attorney Kerry St. James made no objection to the continuance, acknowledging his office also has not seen the full autopsy report.

Cisneros is scheduled to appear in Routt County Court at 3 p.m. Dec. 5.
