Craig Carrying around a few extra pounds? Starting this week, you've got a chance to do something about it.
Craig's Largest Loser, a weight-loss competition modeled after the hit NBC television show, begins Friday with registration and a weigh-in at MJK Sales and Feed, 290 Ranney.
Registration lasts from 8 a.m. to noon.
The contest, sponsored by The Memorial Hospital, the Craig Daily Press, KRAI and Chaos Ink, concludes with a second weigh-in Aug. 30.
"We're just hoping people that do it pick up some healthy habits and lose some weight along the way," said Amy Knights, TMH diabetes educator/wellness coordinator.
Craig's Largest Loser entails individuals and teams competing against one another on losing weight, based on percentage. Health-oriented prizes will be awarded to winners.
People can't lose weight without exercising and changing their diet, Knights said.
She said a good start for people looking to shed pounds is to simply, "start moving."
"Don't sit on your behind all day," Knights said.
For those with a sedentary lifestyle, Knights advises to start slowly by walking 10 to 15 minutes per day. Then, gradually increase your exercise time to 30 minutes and so on, she said.
This will help "burn more calories than you're putting in your mouth."
Her advice for dieting is just as simple - eat smaller meals.
"People eat too large of portions," she said. "Food is a comfort thing, a social thing, too, so we like to eat.
"Sometimes you don't always need to clean your plate."
Another simple but effective dietary tip is drinking more water. Knights said a person should consume half his or her body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if a person weighs 200 pounds, that person should be drinking 100 ounces of water per day.
"Nobody takes in enough water," she said, adding that sometimes people confuse hunger pangs with the body being dehydrated.
Based on recent Moffat County data, some dieting and exercise might be good for local residents.
According to the 2005-06 Community Indicators Project, the average Body Mass Index for men and women in Moffat County above 19-years-old meets the definition of overweight, and in some cases, obesity.
Entry fees competing in the individual or team categories in Craig's Largest Loser is $10 per person. The fee includes a free T-shirt and water bottle. Step counters will be available for additional purchase.
For $100 per person, contestants can undergo testing at TMH to measure cholesterol, body fat, blood pressure, heart rate, flexibility and strength, among other indicators. Additional follow-ups, monitoring progress and offering nutritional counseling costs $25.

I have to respond to this one. Comments such as yours are exactly why some do not get out and do much to improve their health as they might be afraid to run into an idiot such as yourself. With obesity on the rise in this nation I have to commend each and every team member for getting up and doing something to better themselves and their health rather than sit around doing nothing(or typing on some worthless forum). These people are dedicating themselves to losing some weight and making them feel better about themselves and their health. Some do not have the time, some do not have the motivation and some are hiding from people like you because they do not want to hear comments such as yours. As a spouse of a teammember, and on behalf of the rest of the teams and their members, I am insulted by your comment. Not only is my wife a member of a team, she is a bright, beautiful person that dedicates her life to her work,(which can be ungrateful most of the time)her family and to people in general, even smart mouths like you. Her job is high-stress, long hours and very demanding which leaves her no time to look out for herself, which she always puts second to whatever else is going on. I am pretty damn proud of her that she is squeezing this challenge into her schedule and she is excited to take on a new outlook about her life. She plans on losing some weight, better her overall health and maybe meet some new friends in the process. Maybe if you(and a few others)would unplug yourselves from the evil pc, get out more often and meet new faces you might just have a different outlook on life in general. It seems that all some of you can do is sit on your(fatty??)asses behind some fabricated user name and bitch about why the sky is blue and how come our town is not like it used to be. Life is to enjoy while you have it because tomorrow you might not, and wasting valuable time pissing and moaning is just not worth what it absorbs. My apologies for venting but I have been reading this forum for about three years now and alot of the posters here are just plain rude, mean and reeeediculous with the multiple postings and the neverending rants about what they feel is "right". Trust me, I have learned to skip over those now and read only what I find to be important which is not much since I do not live in Routt. I do not plan to post, and did not plan to post, unless I feel it necessary to defend something, including my "turf", that part of the woods we call Moffat County and the hoidy-toidys up your way call something else. Thank you and sign me, David Moore Proud husband of Craig's future largest loser

I'm with you David...and with a husband like you on her side, I am sure your wife will be successful in whatever she takes on. Good Luck to her.
As for the "contest" - I think it is a great and fun idea. Teamwork always produces greater results and this should be fun to boot.

David Moore: WOW. From someone who is constantly battling the fannie, how nice it is to read of the support you have towards your wife.
To the initial comment from "south routt mucker"...Fat people can lose weight, however there is not cure for you - the enormously ignorant.

Thanks kingsride, vic and dundalk. sbvor, you have to give no explanation for yourself I know who you are. Remember, I have been lurking for quite some time now and I know who your alter "ego's" are, or were. You can't fool me. You may have a bit more intelligence(maybe)but I find you dry, boring and just plain bored considering the length and frequency of your postings. None to worry though, yours are the ones I skip over the most. Oh, and a comment from my wife to southrouttmucker regarding your comment, she said to put an "f" where your "m" is in your user name, it would fit better;) David

While I find global warming exploitation, and leftist lead headed rational interesting, I must ask: What the hell does any of that have to do with someone's ability to lose weight?
One thing that I do find of interest is that the insurance carriers do not pay for the various prescription meds that assist in weight loss. Rather, you will find that insurance companies are more inclined to pay for Type II Age Onset Diabetes, drugs for cholesterol and hypertension, even covering the costs from chronic orthopaedic injuries which result from obesity.
Odd enough though, most insurance carriers have programs to help with the cost of Viagra, Cialis and penile implants.
Who's running the dog and pony show with these insurance carriers.

Yep, lefty all the way. Eat with it, write with it and throw a ball with it, everything else is right:) My apologies for being different. You chose to dissect my first post and, with what little support you gave, it generally had nothing to do with any of what I was trying to get across. I do not desire to argue with you and will not be sucked into your pit of world doom and demise. Good night.

Good luck, madmoores. Those of us that see this as nothing to do with politics...meaning people who use their brain for independent thought...wish all participants the best of luck. SBvor represents a fringe element of even the waaaaay far-right parties, and sees everything as politically motivated.
