— Losing three seniors from last year was supposed to hurt the Soroco track and field girls relay teams.

Instead, with three new members and an old staple, those three seniors will have to move out of the record books to make room for the 2007 version of the Soroco Rams.

Led by Sarajane Rossi - the lone holdover - Traci Schlegel, Tatum Lombardi and Toni Lombardi, Soroco broke the school record set last year in the 1,600-meter relay by more than a second.

"Last year we broke it by 10 seconds, and we thought that record wouldn't come down for quite awhile," Rossi said. "But then here we come back again."

Running in the first heat, Soroco posted a time of 4 minutes, 17.01 seconds. The Rams had to wait for the second heat to see if they would qualify for today's finals. Once the second heat finished, Soroco found itself in seventh place and in the No. 8 lane in today's final.

"I'm so happy," senior Tatum Lombardi said. "It's weird. It's weird for me to think I'd be here and break a school record."

The record in the 1,600 relay finished off a rollercoaster of a day and a rollercoaster of emotions for the Rams.

All four girls ran a finals qualifying 800-sprint medley and then - in perhaps their strongest relay, the 800 - Soroco finished two spots out of qualifying for the finals.

And for Rossi, whose strongest event is the 800-meter run, a 10th-place finish wasn't what she was expecting after coming into the event in the fourth qualifying spot.

Still, despite the ups-and-downs, Soroco was able to put it together for the final event of the day.

"I don't know with these kids," Rams coach David Bruner said. "They're fighters and that says a lot about them. They have a lot of heart. We don't have some of the most talented kids, but these kids have a lot of heart and they put everything out on the line. I'm really happy right now."

Today, Soroco competes in the finals of the girls 800-sprint medley and 800-meter relay and the boys 3,200-meter relay.

Events begin at 10 a.m.
