Steamboat Springs The Soroco Rams track and field team is hoping for some good weather and its best times, Friday and Saturday at the regional track meet in Grand Junction.
"That will be something new for us," Soroco coach David Bruner joked after a long and cold day at the Western Slope League meet, Saturday in Kremmling. The league meet provided the Rams with a perfect opportunity to gauge nine opponents it will face again at the end of the week.
As the worst of the day's precipitation came down toward the end of the meet, Soroco turned on its finest performances of the day in the 1,600-meter relays.
The boys 4x4 team of Steven Meade, Peter Daley, Alex Estes and Johnny DeCosta looked as though it was falling behind until Estes' third leg, where he regained space to put the team in second.
"He made up a bunch of yards, it's neat to see a freshman run a heck of a race like that," Bruner said.
From there, DeCosta ran in the anchor leg to put the team in first place.
The same group of boys finished fourth in the 4x200, and the 4x800 team - David Roberts, Michael Schmidt, Daley and DeCosta - took second.
The girls 4x4 team, which has found success and a string of first-place finishes all season long, didn't fare as well. They fell behind Paonia to a second-place finish. But Bruner thinks the loss will only make the foursome of Toni and Tatum Lombardi, Traci Schlegel and Sarajane Rossi hungrier for a top-three regional finish to catapult them to the state meet, May 18 to 19 in Pueblo. They shouldn't have any trouble if the relay team competes like it did in the 4x200, an event they had little trouble winning.
Other podium finishes for the Soroco girls included Rossi's win in the 800, her third-place finish in the 400 and Schlegel's third-place finish in the 300 hurdles. The girls finished in sixth place.
The boys finished seventh with third-place finishes from DeCosta in the 800 and Daley in the 1,600.
"It was a tough day - a couple kids were sick and a couple got injured," Bruner said. "But overall with the conditions, I was real pleased with how they finished the day."
Other Soroco athletes that placed in the meet included: Matt Watwood and Dennis Morgan (fourth and sixth in the discus, respectively), Steven Meade (seventh in the high jump), Daley (seventh in the 800), Amber Larsen (eighth in the 1,600), Emily Hallenbeck (fifth in the long jump and triple jump), Schlegel (fifth in the 200), Beth Strait (sixth in the 3,200), Journee Germain (seventh in the 3,200), the girls 4x800 team (fourth) and the girls sprint medley (sixth).
