Steamboat Springs Spring break left the Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse team hanging.
Steamboat's final Foothills Conference game, a rescheduled match against a talented Wheat Ridge team, was days before spring break and saw the Sailors field a depleted squad that gave up big plays to end the regular, varsity season at 4-8.
Steamboat then returned for a week of practice for a final non-league game away, against a No. 6 ranked Regis Jesuit varsity "B" team.
Steamboat made the most of the trip to Aurora on Friday afternoon by beating the Regis team, 5-2.
"It was a good all around effort and the kids did a good job, Steamboat coach Bob Hiester said. "We played consistent. We did get ourselves in a hole penalty-wise, but we got out of those."
Steamboat charged to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
"I thought all phases of the game went well," Hiester said.
Regis scored a goal to cut the Steamboat lead to one, but Scot Forney shut out the Regis offense again in the third quarter. The Steamboat netminder finished with eight saves, while his team went on to score an additional two fourth-quarter goals to seal the win.
