Locals 2007: Sheila Fountain

Steamboat Springs Dr. Sheila Fountain, M.D., was surprised by her chance to be featured in Locals.
Fountain came to Steamboat Springs less than four years ago, after a childhood in South Carolina and medical residency in Atlanta. She acknowledged that not only is she a relative newcomer to town, but she also only skied her first black diamond - or expert-level ski run - this winter.
But Fountain may still have a shot at "local" status: her two-and-a-half-year-old son, Jonah, is a native.
"He probably is a local, since he was born here, right?" Fountain asked with a laugh. "He's going to out-ski me in a year."
Fountain also likely knows more people in Steamboat than some lifetime residents. She said more than 3,000 patients walk through the doors of Pediatrics of Steamboat Springs, the practice she shares with partners Dr. Ronald Famiglietti and Dr. Dana Fitzgerald, in the Medical Office Building adjacent to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Fountain said she commonly treats ailments ranging from bronchiolitis to heart problems to asthma and, for many young patients, "the bugs they pick up in daycare."
Fountain said she, her husband Wes, Jonah and possibly more Fountains - "Jonah needs a brother or sister," she said - are in Steamboat to stay.
"It's a great small town," she said. "I grew up in a small town, and there's a lot of advantages. That's what I want for my kids."
