Locals 2007: Marty and Shauna Lamansky

Steamboat Springs When two experienced public speakers argue, there is only one way to end it - the family dog.
But Star, a black Labrador retriever and border collie mix, doesn't often have to mediate in the home of Marty and Shauna Lamansky.
"We are both too skilled in communication to argue with each other," Marty admitted.
Marty and Shauna are the longtime coaches of the Steamboat Springs High School forensics team. In fact, there are only two high school forensics coaches in Colorado who have been coaching longer than Marty.
Often referred to as "ML," Marty has been coaching and teaching speech, drama or social studies at the high school for 27 years. Often referred to as "Mrs.," Shauna has been a co-coach for 19 years.
"They've tried to do different things, like the 'MLskies,' but it comes back to 'ML' and 'Mrs.,'" Shauna said about the nicknames their students give to them.
Marty and Shauna grew up competing in forensics and think the key to coaching is being a good audience member.
"You listen to what makes an appealing speech," Marty said.
Marty grew up in Colorado and has his bachelor's and master's degrees and his administrative license from the University of Northern Colorado.
Shauna spent her freshman and sophomore years at Northeast Missouri State University, now named Truman State University, before moving to Steamboat to ski.
She quickly started coaching speech, and, after one year working together, Marty asked Shauna over for dinner. They married nearly 15 years ago.
