Steamboat Springs — The thousands of guests at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and Conference Center and the thousands of children in the Hayden School District who have had the privilege of meeting Marion Gibson, should thank local legend Billy Kidd.
Gibson, who lived with her husband, Les, and children in Redding, Pa., was part of the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club.
Kidd had come out and given a speech to the group and told them about Steamboat Springs. Gibson said her family visited Steamboat in 1973 and a year later was ready to make the move away from big-city life.
Once in Routt County, Gibson instantly made her mark on the community.
Her first career took her to Hayden as school nurse for the school district. Gibson worked closely with the community and the school and said the ultimate honor came in 1999 - her final year in Hayden.
Gibson was recognized as one of six statewide recipients of the Florence Nightingale Award, an annual award given by the Colorado Nurses Association.
By 2000, Gibson felt it was time to leave Hayden, and, because she always wanted to be a concierge, the Sheraton provided her the perfect opportunity.
"I guess I like people," said Gibson, who won the 2002 Concierge of the Year in Colorado. "They give you energy and a purpose in life."
While Gibson has seen Steamboat change drastically in the past three decades, she said two of the most important things remain.
"Time goes quickly," she said. "(Steamboat) has changed tremendously in the number of people downtown. But the quality of the people and the snow have stayed the same."
