Locals 2007: Kent Osteen

Steamboat Springs On cold Sunday mornings, the lift operators at the Steamboat Ski Area can always look forward to a friendly "hello" and a chocolate chip cookie courtesy of Kent Osteen.
"They're often forgotten, so they get excited and say, 'Here comes that cookie guy!'" Osteen said.
That cookie guy is a retired dentist from Oklahoma who moved to the area nine years ago to be near two of his sons and the great outdoors. Soon after, Osteen began hosting the mountaintop worship services at Steamboat Ski Area, after which he makes his famous cookie runs.
Osteen calls the religious services - held at 1:30 p.m. next to the Ragnar's sleigh at the Vista Overlook - the highlight of his week.
"You never know where people are from or how many will show," Osteen said. "Each service is different. We make it interdenominational so people can have a good worship service in the outdoors and take something to help them with their lives. How many people get to experience that on a mountaintop?"
Osteen doesn't just take his service work to the ski area. He and Carrol, his wife of 47 years, work for the Southern Baptist Convention's Mission Service Corps.
He's traveled as far as Concepcion, Chile, for missionary work and took a second trip to Mexico in February to help teach at and establish churches.
Locally, Osteen serves as deacon at Anchor Way Baptist Church, a chaplain and counselor for the Colorado State Patrol and even as a coach for his son Gary's Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club biathlon team.
