Locals 2007: John and Diane Franklin

Steamboat Springs John and Diane Franklin were so passionate about helping the homeless that they opened their home to strangers who had nowhere else to stay.
John, a deacon at Holy Name Catholic Church, has poured his heart into making the lives of those less fortunate a little more comfortable.
"John is very dedicated and has been very faithful in helping our organization over the years," said David Freseman, executive director of LIFT-UP of Routt County.
Years ago, the Franklins took in those in need if LIFT-UP could not help them, Freseman said.
"He would put a roof over their heads," he said. "To me, that's pretty dedicated."
Diane said volunteerism is at the root of the Catholic faith, and it's something the Holy Name congregation understands and values.
"It's such a vibrant and active church," she said. "Our church is large and giving. There is a lot of need for volunteers to do the work."
John said his charitable interests come from the love in his heart for God and his community and his need to give back.
"It's service to the community in trying to provide the basics of life - food, shelter and clothing," he said. "We aim to serve the poor, the marginalized and anyone who's suffering."
John said being involved in other community agencies such as the Doak Walker Care Center, Partners in Routt County and emergency services was his calling.
"Becoming a deacon six years ago was probably the best thing I've ever done because now I have the time to serve," he said. "I believe that's the best role of a retired person - to serve the community."
