Liz Rawlings: Update programs

Is everyone aware of the need for updating the youth programs in our community?

Since the Community Center question has just been settled and we are about to begin the debate on a new Recreation Center, I think we should also consider the following:

1. The Igloo/Dock facility next to the Ice Rink is in really poor shape. Please visit and see for yourself how this building does not reflect well on our town. The Pee Wee Adventure Club, Afterschool Progam, Youth Corps, etc. are all trying to work out of this cramped, run down facility.

2. There is a great shortage of pre-school and day-care openings locally. Many programs have a one to two-year waiting list. Most families here have to have two working parents and not enough affordable childcare choices.

3. A growing number of middle school and teenaged students are feeling disregarded by the community. We have some outstanding programs and clubs, but there are many that cannot afford them or have different interests. Kids in this age group, as they gain independence, are the most at-risk for making poor lifestyle choices.

4. We need to do something about these problems now. Our youth deserve our attention and best efforts toward a speedy solution.

So, what can we do? An affordable, fast, reusable solution is available and has already been proposed to the City Council. However, with all the talent in this community, I'm sure there are people with other good options. Please send comments and ideas to the City Council at: http://www.steamboatsprings.net/index.php?id=219
