Jimmy Westlake: Columba the Dove
Far below the stars of Orion the Hunter, below the stars of Lepus the Rabbit, even below the stars of Orion's Big Hunting Dog, Canis Major, you can find the stars of a small and often overlooked little constellation, flying just over the southern horizon this time of year. It's Columba the Dove, one of nine constellations in our sky representing a bird. Besides the dove, there are constellations immortalizing a swan, an eagle, a toucan, a phoenix, a peacock, a bird of paradise, a crow and a crane.

Joanne Palmer: I say 'Right on!'
Last Saturday, an epic powder day, I skied with my favorite companion - a Snickers bar. I boarded the gondola with a group of guys who looked so young I calculated they had five chest hairs between them. The only woman, I felt old enough to be their mother. Maybe grandmother. The guys were staring at their boots, heads bobbing to the beat of the music coming through their headphones. We rode in silence until I couldn't stand it anymore.

Routt County has a long history in agriculture. Early settlers needed to raise crops and dairy products for their consumption. Once established, some families began ranching and raising cattle, sheep and horses. Eventually, others raised hay and cool-weather crops for market.

A fair amount of experimenting
More than 100 eighth-graders take part in optional science event
Eighth-graders at Steamboat Springs Middle School aren't much different than eighth-graders anywhere else in the country. Many of the boys think they are better than the girls at most things, and the girls disagree. Best of the Web for March 4
This is the most ridiculous editorial position I've seen ("Our View: Do what's best for kids," on Sunday, Feb. 25). The calendar changes benefit nobody except the district's hired help. There is a personal and narrow Thanksgiving desire on the part of an influential individual somewhere in the mix here. No to this unadulterated boondoggle. One, there is no need. Two, there is no benefit.
Charlie Dresen: Missing diversity
