Toddler scraped up, but fine after being hit by truck

A 2-year-old Steamboat Springs boy sustained minor injuries Tuesday afternoon after a Dodge truck ran over the boy after he fell into the street, police said.

Steamboat Springs Police Capt. Joel Rae said the boy was walking down Yampa Street near Eighth Street with his mother and 5-year-old sister when the boy apparently got free of his mother's hand, tripped and fell into the street.

A truck pulling into an open parking spot on Yampa Street reportedly ran over the boy's lower torso after he fell into the street, Rae said.

The boy was not injured in the accident, but was taken to the hospital to get checked out.

"It's a miracle he wasn't hurt worse," Rae said. "He was just left with a few scrapes, that's all."

Rae called the incident "an absolute freak accident."

"We're just glad he's OK," he said.

The driver of the truck was not cited, he said.
