Shawn Brannon: Town feel changed

Steamboat Springs — I have been visiting your town for several years now and have always loved the laid-back flavor that the 'Boat had to offer. This year, I must admit that the town's feel has changed. I was disappointed to see the rampant change towards commercialism and redevelopment. I have never see such a trashing of such a wonderful place take so little time. I remember a town that prided itself on cowboy ski races and an easy-going atmosphere. I fear that with the new makeover, that warm feel will be lost. The deals have been made and the town seems to be on its way to becoming another Vail or Telluride. How can our mountain towns continue to sell out in this way? Have we completely forgotten why we love them so much? Character, by Webster's definition, is "one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual." If things continue down the same path, I believe that Steamboat Springs will quickly lose its character.
