Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs School Board has revised its e-mail investigation interview transcripts.
According to the changes, Kelly Stanford, who is the wife of Steamboat Pilot & Today Editor Scott Stanford, has answered questions posed by investigator Earl Rhodes. Stanford initially was listed as one of six people who either refused to cooperate with the investigation or didn't return phone calls from the investigator.
Stanford is a former director of curriculum and instruction for the Steamboat Springs School District. She resigned from her position earlier this year.
The School Board's initial transcripts of the interviews, released July 9, stated that Stanford did not return Rhodes' phone calls. The revised transcripts show Stanford's name has been removed from the list of nonparticipants, and a new statement by Rhodes has been included in the 160-page document.
According to an e-mail sent by Rhodes on Tuesday to School Board President Denise Connelly, Rhodes called and left a message for Stanford on June 6. He said Stanford called him back an hour later, but he was eating lunch.
"I arranged to call her at 3 p.m. on that day," he said. "At that time, I called her and did not get an answer to my call. I don't know if I left a message or could have left a message or not. I did not call her again."
The updated transcripts reveal Stanford contacted Connelly and board member Jeff Troeger on Tuesday to say that she cooperated with the investigation.
"There was a misunderstanding regarding who was to make the call that afternoon," Stanford said. "That misunderstanding aside, the fact remains that I promptly returned his call and expressed my willingness to answer questions in a subsequent conversation."
Last week, Stanford e-mailed answers to Rhodes' questions. Those answers are included in the updated transcripts. According to her statements, Stanford said she first learned about contact between former Strawberry Park Elementary School Principal John DeVincentis and Mercer Island, Wash., teacher Joby McGowan in May or June 2006. Stanford says her husband told her about the contact.
Stanford added that she did not know the contact between McGowan and DeVincentis was via e-mail until DeVincentis' controversial e-mails were released to the Pilot & Today by former School Board member Pat Gleason in March.
