Hayden police eye new station

Hayden — The Hayden Police Department operates out of Hayden Town Hall, but plans are in place to change that.
"We're working real hard on the new police station proposal we have," police Chief Ray Birch said.
Birch said a site for the station already has been selected near The Haven Assisted Living Center on Shelton Lane. Birch and Town Manager Russ Martin will go before the Routt County Commissioners on Tuesday to request a $500,000 energy impact grant to cover about a third of the cost to construct the station.
Birch said the department's current arrangement is "ridiculous," with seven officers sharing office space of less than 200 square feet and also sharing desks and computers. Birch said Hayden police don't have an interview room, a place to process evidence, meeting space or adequate space to store evidence and gear.
The department borrows space such as the Town Council chambers when available and rents a mini-storage facility.
Integrity and confidentiality also are sacrificed, Birch said, when people have to walk through Town Hall to have a discussion with police.
"It's just pretty ridiculous," Birch said. "It will be a lot more reasonable to have our own building."
Birch said construction of the estimated $1.5 million station is expected to begin in spring 2008.
