Vacancies on Fund Board, commissions

— The Education Fund Board has a vacancy for a community member with the recent resignation of Keri Rusthoi. The Fund Board is responsible for determining how to spend the city's half-cent sales tax.

The Technology Commission, which deals with technology needs of the district, also has two vacant positions. The Educational Excellence Commission will have a vacant position soon.

Community members living within Steamboat Springs School District boundaries interested in filling any of these positions can contact the school district at 879-1530. School officials will connect people with the appropriate contact person on the Fund Board or on the commissions.

Newborn Network needs community volunteers

Do you have two to four hours a month to visit families in your community and celebrate the birth of their child? Help all children in Routt County get off to a "Bright Beginning" by becoming a Newborn Network volunteer. On request from the family, a local volunteer provides a home visit that includes a gift bag and information about community resources and child development. Our home visiting program is available at no cost to all parents in Routt County. A volunteer training will be held Jan. 29. For more information, call 879-0977.

Visiting Nurse Association needs volunteer reserves

Join the Visiting Nurse Association in Routt and Moffat counties in its efforts to generate a dependable volunteer contingent of medical and non-medical personnel who are ready to perform various public health services during local, regional, state and possibly national emergencies. VNA is hosting a community interest meeting about becoming involved with Northwest Colorado's first Medical Reserve Corps from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today in conference room 1 at Yampa Valley Medical Center. There will be in-class and online trainings in addition to active simulations and practice sessions. For more information, call VNA volunteer coordinator Diana Eilers at 871-7648.

'A Taste of History' on sale Fridays for $15

The Soroco Parent Teacher Organization has published a cookbook called "A Taste of History." The hardbound book includes five pages of South Routt history, 280 recipes from local residents and historical photos. The $15 book will be sold Fridays at South Routt Elementary School in Yampa. Horizons Ski and Snowboard Program

Horizons Specialized Services has opportunities for volunteers to ski, snowboard and/or snowshoe with clients on Saturday afternoons from late January through mid-March. Volunteers will receive complimentary lift tickets to the Steamboat Ski Area as well as the gift of joy reflected in the clients' eyes. There also are opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on Thursday afternoons. Call Bette Carlson at 879-4466, ext. 111.

'It's a Girl Thing' begins Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m.

Bud Werner Memorial Library will continue its popular "It's a Girl Thing" book discussion series for girls and women this spring. The free program is open to girls ages 10 to 12 and a woman partner such as a mom, grandmother, friend or teacher. Pairs can sign up for one or two discussions.

Program dates are Feb. 2, March 2 and April 6. Discussions are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the library. The library will give each pair a copy of the discussion book to keep. Pre-registration is required. Call 879-0240 or stop by the children's desk.
