Schools seeking track coaches

— With less than a month before the season begins, Steamboat Springs High School and Soroco High School still are looking for head track and field coaches.

Spring sports are slated to start Feb. 20, and administrators from both schools said they would like to hire someone as soon as possible.

"We're hoping to have someone in by the end of next week," Soroco athletics director Andy Johnson said.

Johnson said the South Routt School District prefers to first look "in house" for a qualified candidate before looking outside of the district. Johnson said he's had several inquiries and plans to make a decision no later than Feb. 2.

Steamboat Springs athletics dir-ector Richard Lee said he's waiting to get more applicants before moving ahead in the process.

Ideally, he said, the future track and field coach would be hired in the next couple of weeks.

"We're looking for someone who, No. 1, can manage the program, is enthusiastic about track and field and can work positively with the students," Lee said.

Lee said he's had informal conversations with several people about the opening, but said he is looking for more applicants.

The opening, Lee said, has been advertised locally and state-wide for several months.

Applications may be picked up at the district office or the high school, he said.

Once Lee gets enough applicants, he said interviews are set up with a cross section of people, including students, parents and coaches.

Lee said the track and field program already has three highly qualified assistant coaches who work specifically with athletes in certain events, so the new coach wouldn't have to "start from square one."

"We have a really well-qualified group of assistant coaches," Lee said. "So a new person coming in wouldn't have to carry the program itself."
