Routt County Undersheriff David Bustos will be paid a starting salary of $64,022, about $18,000 less than what Sheriff Gary Wall asked county officials to approve.

During a hearing Tuesday, the Routt County Board of Commissioners said starting Bustos at Step 9 on the county's 11-step pay scale set a bad precedent and that Bustos is not qualified to receive an $82,077 salary.

Wall said Bustos deserved the higher salary because his job is "highly administrative" and because of his experience as an assistant police chief. Wall told the commissioners he was not asking for any more money than what already was approved in his 2007 budget.

The landmark More Barn should survive another winter after workers this week added new supports to its sagging timbers and a broken ridge beam.

The More Barn, depicted in many photographs marketing Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Ski Area, has become a local icon over the decades. But Steamboat's climate has taken a toll on the approximately 80-year-old barn, and its roof has been sagging for about a year.

A new subdivision proposed on approximately 40 acres of land to the east of the barn has provided the impetus for stabilizing the old structure.

City Council members recently made temporary stabilization work on the barn a requirement for the preliminary approval of a residential subdivision called Steamboat Barn Village. Developer Robert Comes contracted with Dana Carl of D.C. Enterprises to make temporary improvements to the barn this week. Comes has agreed to provide $150,000 for additional repairs to the barn. That work could take place this summer.

Three Steamboat Springs businesses failed an alcohol compliance check Friday evening and now face penalties including fines and the suspension or loss of liquor licenses.

Friday's more sobering results came just one month after local stores and restaurants achieved 100 percent compliancy during a random Steamboat Springs Police Department alcohol compliance check in December. Police called the results of the most recent check disappointing.

The businesses that failed Friday's check were Rex's American Grill & Bar, Arctic Liquors and City Market.

Safeway, Ski Haus Liquor, Market on the Mountain, Jade Summit Pirate's Pub, Cugino's Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, Mazzola's and Three Peaks Grill passed the alcohol compliance check Friday.

In sports, the Soroco boys wrestling team may be small on numbers, but it is big on results.

At the Class 2A Western Slope League tournament Saturday in Rangely, Soroco fielded wrestlers in only seven of the 14 weight classes. But five of those seven placed in the top four, propelling the Rams to a tie with Hayden for fifth place overall.

Three Soroco wrestlers won their classes.

Justin Iacovetto and Dennis Morgan won their class championship matches by pinning their opponents.

Also, Soroco's Joel Schlegel defeated Rangely's Chance Holcomb.

The wins now place Iacovetto, Morgan and Schlegel as the state's No. 1-, 2- and 3-ranked wrestlers, respectively, in Class 2A, according to On The Mat Rankings.

Here is your first look at weather. It was 10 degrees at 8 a.m. under clear skies. We're on our way to a high of 28 degrees.
