New Gov. Bill Ritter laid out an ambitious agenda Sunday during a stop at the Yacht Club in Steamboat Springs. Specifically, he mentioned making Colorado a leader in the development of renewable energies and focusing money on education, both K through 12 and higher education. He also advocated for broader health insurance coverage. Some in the audience questioned how Ritter would pay for his plans and he acknowledged that still has to be determined. But he thanked Routt County for its support in the 2006 election. Ritter's stop Sunday was part of a weekend tour of the state.
The Steamboat Pilot & Today is getting into the TV business. The Newspaper announced Monday that it is acquiring Steamboat TV18 and Winter Park TV 18. The leased access cable channels already offer some local programming as well as RSN Television. RSN offers programming specifically for mountain and beach communities. Plans are to add this video news update on Channel 18 initially with the goal of developing a traditional newscast for Steamboat Springs.
The Bud Light Rocks the Boat Concert Series begins Feb. 17 with a lineup of five nationally known bands. The bands will appear in this order: Joseph Israel and the Jerusalem Band, North Mississippi All-stars, The Freddy Jones Band, Sister Hazel and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. All of the bands will appear on stage in Gondola Square, which each concert beginning at 3 p.m. This is the seventh year for the free concert series and the lineup is the best yet, said Andy Wirth, vice president of marketing for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.
In Sports, the Steamboat Sailors kept their record perfect in the Western Slope League Saturday with an 85-49 rout of Battle Mountain. The boys are 11-3 overall and 6-0 in the WSL. Their next game is Friday in Rifle.
The Steamboat girls, fresh off their first win of the season on Friday night, could not maintain the momentum and lost Saturday to Battle Mountain, 48-32. The Sailors are 1-13 on the season. The girls also travel to Rifle Friday.
The Sailors hockey team continued its impressive start with a 6-1 win Saturday over Coronado. Greg Ingalls had a hat trick for the Sailors, who moved to 9-1-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference with the win. The Sailors get Pine Creek Friday at home.
Here is your first look at weather. It was 0 degrees at 8 a.m. under clear skies. We're on our way to a high of 19 degrees. It's going to warm up the rest of the week, with highs forecast in the upper 20s and lower 30s. There's little to no precipitation in the forecast.
