Midgets fall to Gunnison

— Different day, same result.

After falling to the Gunnison Blades, 6-2, on Saturday, the Steamboat Springs Midget hockey team lost again to Gunnison - this time 5-2 - on Sunday at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Steamboat seemingly had the advantage after outplaying and outworking Gunnison in the first period.

After Gunnison scored first, Steamboat's A.J. Johnson found Jimmy Whelihan to tie the score up at 1-1.

In the second period Steamboat looked like its advantage in the first period would carry over. Five minutes into the period - with Steamboat on the power play - Austin Anderson stole the puck in the Gunnison zone and slipped the puck past the Blades goalie for a 2-1 lead.

"It was kind of a lucky goal," Anderson said. "I was just following the puck, and I was there to pick up the puck. The goalie kind of blocked it but it dribbled in."

Unfortunately though, Gunnison took over the last 10 minutes of the second period.

The Blades scored four times in a four-minute span to put the game out of reach.

"They just started getting shots on and rebounds on net," Whelihan said. "I think we were just chasing around and were never in position."

In the third period, Steamboat couldn't get anything going despite having two power play opportunities.

The loss puts Steamboat's record at 4-3 and on the cusp of making the final tournament of the year.

"That is a really good team," Johnson said. "I look forward to possibly playing them again."

With a month left in its season - and a return trip to Gunnison on the horizon - Johnson said he feels confident Steamboat will be able to pull together as a team.

"We just need to buckle down again in practice and become a team again," Johnson said. "That's really all we can do."
